At its most simplistic, it’s about understanding some basic fundamentals of design:įirst up, what is it that you’re looking to share? This will be entirely different for every person, and depends on what purpose Instagram is serving for you. Work out the Basics In order to create a family of content, you must first understand the basic fundamentals of design. Deferring to the grid, plus thinking of your content as a family of cohesive posts, is the best possible way of achieving this. That way whenever somebody sees one of your posts in their feed, they instinctively know that it’s one of yours. On Instagram, you’re looking to create that same feeling. They have a sound that you can identify and understand to be uniquely theirs. Within seconds of one of their songs playing, you know that it’s them. How can I make sure that every post I put out looks and feels in keeping with my brand?.What ties this post to the last one and that one to the one before it?.Do I have too many different things going on?.Have I got too much of one type of content and not enough of another?.How would it look if I post these two images next to each other?.Once you understand this, it starts to stir up some interesting questions: To put it another way, how they look when viewed all together in the grid. However, given Instagram is by default a visual platform, give some additional thought not only to how each individual post looks, but how they stack up as a family. ![]() Those new to Instagram think that, like Twitter, it’s about putting out one good post after another. The very best Instagram accounts know the power of first impressions. You see, the very best accounts on Instagram are the ones that package their content in an enticing and captivating way. What did they have in common? What was it that made you follow them? Chances are, you took one look at their grid - all their posts lined up in neat little squares on their profile - and you thought: “Wow, that looks good.” Think about any of the accounts you have followed recently on Instagram. Here are ten eye-grabbing styles that will inspire you. She is a successful novelist, and has written for television series including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and Smallville. Nancy Holder, wife of producer Wayne Holder, wrote the storyline in the manual (from a base scenario suggested by Michael Newton and the FTL team). While many previous games such as Alternate Reality: The Dungeon, The Bard's Tale, Ultima and Wizardry offered Dungeons & Dragons-style role-playing, Dungeon Master established several new standards for role-playing video games and video games in general.Īnother factor in its popularity may have been the imaginative mythology, with players often reporting a nurturing identity with their chosen characters. This kind of attention to detail and focus on the user interface was typical of the game and helped create an often captivating sense of craft and ingenuity. For example, a fireball spell was created by mixing the fire symbol with the wing symbol. It also introduced some novel control methods including the spell casting system, which involved learning sequences of runes which represented the form and function of a spell's effect. Other features of Dungeon Master included allowing players to directly manipulate objects and the environment by clicking the mouse in the enlarged first-person view. Dungeon Master was, however, responsible for popularizing these elements. Dungeons of Daggorath for the TRS-80 Color Computer first employed them in 1982. Dungeon Master was not the first game to introduce these features. Abstract Dungeons and Dragons style experience points and levels were eschewed in favor of a system where the characters' skills were improved directly via using them. ![]() Other factors in immersiveness were the use of sound effects to indicate when a creature was nearby, and (primitive) dynamic lighting. At one point, I got stuck in a looped hallway. These moments are neat, but they can also be disorienting, like when you walk through a doorway and suddenly find yourself falling through the floor.Įxploring Superliminal’s illogical spaces is novel, unfortunately, it also leads to one of the game’s biggest flaws: it is sometimes hard to know what the game is demanding of the player. Some of Superliminal’s levels aren’t puzzles as much as they are interactive optical illusions and the environment will shift and warp as you move. For example, at one point I reached for a box only to watch it disintegrate in my hands. However, things are rarely what they seem, and developer Pillow Castle constantly plays with your expectations. This perspective manipulation mechanic is really neat and I had fun shrinking big objects down so they could fit through tiny holes and enlarging small wedges of cheese to create ramps up to second-story doors.Īs Superliminal progresses, its puzzles naturally evolve. This works both ways, and I got a real thrill out of plucking giant houses off the horizon to shrink them down so I could set them on a table as if they were a doll’s accessory. In Superliminal, you can use this to your advantage, so when you hold small objects up close they actually do become larger. For example, if you hold an apple close to your face it looks bigger than it actually is. One of its strongest gimmicks is how it allows you to use your perspective to manipulate objects. Superliminal is a first-person puzzler that plays with forced perspectives. Unfortunately, using dream logic to solve real puzzles also provides its fair share of frustrations. Impressively, it evokes many of the emotions we have while we sleep. Superliminal is a puzzle game that attempts to explore those feelings and the fuzzy logic that only exists inside our dreams. To counteract this, the final third of Superliminal trades the element of challenge for artistic merit to pick up those loose ends. Our dreams are often thrilling, arresting, and terrifying – sometimes they are all three at once. The game is comprised of thematic sections, but it seems to play its trump cards immediately, as if out of excitement.Ĭhief among Superliminal’s issues is that it underplays its story in the first half of the game, and even when it explains the world around you, it’s at the wrong points of gameplay, when you’re engrossed in its clever puzzles. It’s a simple case of pacing: while the puzzles are often clever, they’re not as plentiful, nor do they push the established mechanics further than those opening stages did. Sadly, for all its highs, Superliminal seems to lose its way in its second half. Superliminal also has the honor of creating one of the most atmospheric “horror” sections I’ve enjoyed in a game for a long time: one that played out in a way I simply never expected, but one that’s testament to Shih’s carefully curated universe. ![]() Corridors may look navigable until you get closer, when you realize you’ve been duped by anamorphosis puzzles are regularly ridiculous to the point of laughter even the loading screens raise a smile in a way that the story, and the narration, never quite achieve. This comedy is one of Superliminal’s key strengths. You’ll find an odd pattern, which when lined up, creates a new object or path in another area, items endlessly duplicate, adding a surprisingly well-executed idea that incorporates a genuine level of humor. In its first half, the game has a consistent habit of stumping you, especially when it introduces a new ability to play with. ![]() Superliminal's flagship forced perspective element is superbly executed. |
